Milk Tart Day at Elandshaven

Why the Milk Tart is a South African Classic

We look back at the history of the tea-time favourite and what makes it quintessentially South African. Without a doubt, the one thing you will find at every church bazaar or flee market is milk tart. As we celebrate National Milk Tart Day on 27 February, we dig in to find the history of this well-loved treat.

Different sources have different dates of when the milk tart originated, most suggested that is was between the 15th and 17th century when the Dutch settlers in South Africa made it. Milk tart consists of a buttery crust with a custard filling made of milk, flour, sugar and eggs and is topped off with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

But what make a milk tart quintessentially South African is that everyone has their own way of making it an their own preference. Crustless milk tarts are becoming the in-thing and you can even make a milk tart macaron. Our valued residents gather to enjoy delicious milk tarts together, turning the occasion into a warm community experience. Thank you to everyone who joined us in making the day so special.
